How to Deal with Panic Attacks
Dealing with panic attacks can be tough because they happen without warning or reasoning and strike fear into the person experiencing the attack. The feeling of fear that you get is a lot worse than simply feeling stressed. People who suffer from panic attacks find themselves terrified by the experience.
Living With Anxiety And Panic
There is actually a large number of people that suffer from panic attacks. According to the Merck Manual Report about 33% of adults suffer panic attacks each year. Some people are lucky and only experience one attack and then never have another while others experience them more frequently. Often times this turns into some form of an anxiety disorder. Some of the possible disorders are: GAD (generalized anxiety disorder), panic disorder or social phobias.
People who suffer from panic attacks can also suffer from another form of anxiety disorder as well. Even though this is possible there is a difference between anxiety and panic. The main difference between the two is the length of time that each lasts and how intense the symptoms of panic anxiety attacks. A panic attack will last a person only a short time and be intense, while an anxiety attack comes on slower, are less intense and last longer.
Anxiety physical symptoms often include things like: increased heart rate and a feeling that your heart will beat right out of your chest, have dizziness, feeling of nausea, and trouble catching one’s breath. Often people say that they are dying or think that they are losing their minds.
Now if a person has symptoms that happen suddenly and only last for a few minutes then they are actually experiencing a panic attack, not an anxiety attack. The symptoms of a panic attack are a little different and include things like:
Shortness of breath
Pounding in your chest, heart palpitations or ringing in your ears
Pain in your chest
Trembling or shaking of your body
Feeling as though you are choking
Suddenly sweating
Feeling nauseas or stomach pains
Feeling dizzy, lightheaded or faint
Feeling as though you are going crazy or losing control of things
Have a fear of dying
Parts of your body going numb or tingling
Getting cold or hot flashes
Having trouble swallowing
These are symptoms of panic attacks, and normally only last up to 30 minutes. There are times though when they can last for up to an hour.
Approximately 2.4 million Americans between the ages of 18 and 54 suffer from panic attacks according to the National Institute of Mental Health. Some of these could also be contributed to other anxiety disorders, the most common being drug abuse or depression.
There is a difference between panic disorders and panic attacks as well. A person with a panic disorder will suffer from more frequent and unexplainable attacks. Often times a person who has suffered from an attack will start to worry about having another one and eventually they will start to avoid the situation in which they believed caused the attack in the first place. Once they start to do this then they will move into the category of having a panic disorder rather than just suffering from attacks.
Some people who have had gone through the symptoms of panic anxiety attacks often don’t seek treatment because they believe there is no treatment for panic attacks. Also, they worry about what others might say and end up suffering for no reason.
Treatment for panic attacks is available and can help people who suffer from attacks lead a normal and happy life. A lot of times the only thing keeping these people from being happy is their worry about another attack happening. This a lot of times causes the person to avoid social situations so as to avoid the attacks. By treating and dealing with panic attacks people can go through life without fear, which lessens their chances of becoming depressed or developing another form of anxiety disorder.
